As I reflect on this year, I think about the successes and challenges I’ve faced during the past twelve months. I’m sure many of you will do this, too. With me, I think not only about my own triumphs and trials, but also about the degree of coaching successes I’ve had with the 100-plus businesspeople in my sales and executive coaching programs.
I’m especially thinking of two specific salespeople. One had his best year ever with sales up 80% over last year. That’s quite impressive considering his challenging industry and the still-anemic economy. I compare his success to another salesperson who had a less-than-stellar year. I’ll be authentic and go ahead and say that this salesperson absolutely underperformed. It was disappointing to me as his coach—this guy is talented, he has potential and he’s even handsome, too!
I think it might be worth our while to compare these two individuals and their vastly different years—not as a public appraisal but as a study to help you reflect on your own year. I think this comparison will be useful as you set your goals for the coming year.
I challenge you to take time during these holidays and figure out how to make next year the best year ever—professionally and personally. Strive to end up like that happily overachieving salesperson. You can do it—after all, he did.
